Wellness 101: My 1st Half-Marathon Experience!

Last Saturday, March 29th, 2014, I ran my very first Half-Marathon, the Inaugural Livermore Half-Marathon. It was an overall incredible experience, from all the intense training during the months before hand to the race day itself.

I woke up  race day morning at 5:15am. Even though I would had loved to sleep longer, my sister and I had to pick-up her co-worker, on our way to Livermore. (On a side note, my sister's co-worker was the runner who originally invited us to sign-up for this Half-Marathon in the first place. She had lots of insight on running and races for us. She's ran several Half-Marathons and Marathons, even including an International Marathon in Paris.) Our race began at 8am sharp, so we needed to leave our apartment by 6am in order to get to Livermore before start time.

Upon picking up my sister's co-worker at her apartment in San Francisco, it started to lightly drizzle, making us all very apprehensive about our impending race. I decided to check the weather forecast for Livermore. The weather report revealed that the rain would hit the city around 10:30/11am. With this in mind, we all decided that we needed to keep up our pace, so we'd be sure to finish within 2.5 hours. Being our first half-marathon, we didn't want to dread the rainfall during the last few miles of our race.

When we finally arrived at the starting line, it was about 15 minutes prior to the 8am start. We took a few group pictures together with the starting line in the background. Then, we took our place with the other runners, around the 2:30 pace. Again, since it was my sister and I's first Half, we figured that going with a slower pace would be best to start, but also keeping in mind that we needed to stick to this pace in order to beat the rain. We all did our best to encourage one another and get our energy up. We laughed and smiled at each other, loosening up our leg muscles and stretching as we waited for the race to start. We collectively decided that it would be best to all split up and go at our own individual pace/path and meet up again at the finish line. This way, we could focus on our individual performance rather than depend on sticking near each other, since we all prepared and trained ourselves differently.

As 8am hit, I slowly made my way forward through to the starting line. I kept up with the 2:30 pacer up until mile two, when I hit the first water station. The water stations had water and electrolytes available every two miles of the course. Needless to say, to stayed hydrated and energized, I drank a small cup of water and electrolytes at each station. When I hit mile three, I made a quick stop to stretch out my legs, as my calf muscles began to tighten up.

I ran each section of the race in three miles increments, to keep myself focused on the current mile and prevent feeling overwhelmed by the miles still to come. I was particularly dreading mile eight, as it was almost entirely uphill. Luckily, with advice from my running friends, I'd strengthened my legs and did some uphill sprinting to prepare myself. The last three miles were the hardest for me. Up until this point, my longest run had only been ten miles, so obviously, I was pushing myself to run farther than I'd ever run before.

Crossing the finish line was an amazing feeling, all my hard work and training had truly paid off. I had a good race, and I successfully finished without injury. My next Half-Marathon is the GIANT Race on September 7th, so I plan to continue to train and run regularly in the months in between.

Are you a runner? Do you have any races coming up that you're currently training for? Let me know in a comment below! :)

03.29.2014 - The Inaugural Livermore Half Marathon

If you follow me on my social media channels, you'll already know that I've spent the past couple of months training for my very 1st Half Marathon. After my Tinker Bell 10K this past January, I did not expect to run a Half-Marathon until May. But my sister was invited to run the Inaugural Livermore Half-Marathon by her co-worker, so we both decided to sign-up. Despite being told that two months wasn't enough time to train, I decided that I'd defy the odds. I've trained as hard as I can, and I know that I am well-prepared and plan to have a good race.

My race is at 8:00am this Saturday, March 29th, 2014. If you're curious, you can see the 13.1 mile course map here. With only 4 more days til race day, I've already started tapering down my week day runs to rest up before Saturday. I'm so excited for packet pick-up on Friday, and race day itself! :)

Also, you may have seen on Instagram that I recently purchased a medal display for my race medals from York Sign Shop on Etsy.com. I've been wanting a medal display for quite some time now. The more races I run, the more proud I am when seeing my race medals. I want to display them proudly considering how far I've come with running. It's still hard to believe that a couple of years ago, I trained to run a 5K (3.1 miles). Now, my short runs during the week are 3 to 5 miles.

I'm so excited to FINALLY cross that finish line on Saturday morning and be able to add my very 1st Half-Marathon medal to my medal display along with my running bib! :)

Are you a runner? Are you training for any races in the near future? Let me know in a comment below!

RUN: 3.1 / 6.2 / 13.1 / 26.2

The more I run the more I love my body. Not because it’s perfect (far from it), but because with every mile I prove to myself that I am capable of more than I ever thought possible! <3

Growing up, I never imagined that I’d be able to call myself a runner. In terms of athleticism and physical activity, I’ve always loved dancing, and I played volleyball and basketball from the 4th through the 8th Grade. Even though I also did track & field for a couple of years (6th & 7th grade), I always preferred the High Jump to any actual running. Running was just never my forte. I’d much rather be spending hours in front of a mirror perfecting my dance techniques.

On a whim, I signed up for the GIANT Race in the summer of 2012. On a quest to live a healthier lifestyle, I decided that a race would be something fun to participate in, and even if I didn’t like it in the end, I’d have a fancy medal to show people. I have several friends and family members who participated in races before, so they all encouraged me, despite my initial hesitation. For those of you who do not know, a 5K is approximately 3.1 miles. Considering that I hadn’t done much running since high school, I was extremely apprehensive. But I found that once I got out there, my stamina and endurance quickly improved. One easy mile turned into two. Two easy miles turned into three. And without fear, I ran my first successful 5K on September 16th, 2012.

Since then, I’ve successfully ran in 6 more races including: The Neon Run 5K, The GIANT Race 10K, Color Me Rad Run 5K, Dirty Girl Mud Run 5K, Awesome 80s Run 5K, and the Tinker Bell 10K.

I plan on running my 1st Half-Marathon on March 29th 2014, the Livermore Half-Marathon. Followed by my 2nd Disney Half-Marathon on Sunday August 31st, 2014, and my 3rd Half-Marathon the GIANT Race on Saturday, September 6th, 2014. Ultimately, I hope to one day go to Greece, where I’ll run my very first Marathon from Athens to Marathon, like Pheidippides. (Minus collapsing and dying of course! LOL)

My current mantra: “RUN. Sweat. Smile. Repeat.” <3

Are you a runner? What is the furthest distance you’ve ever ran? Do you have any fun races in California that you’d recommend? Please leave me a comment, because I’d love to know!
